Reading price charts

Candles, timeframes and volume — how to read a chart without inventing patterns.

Anatomy of a candle

Each candle encodes four numbers: open, high, low and close. The body shows the open-to-close move, the wicks show rejected extremes.

Timeframe changes the story

A downtrend on the 5-minute chart can be a pause inside an uptrend on the daily. Always name your timeframe before forming an opinion.

Volume is confirmation

A breakout on shrinking volume is weaker evidence than the same move on expanding volume.
